MESOTHERAPY or LIPOSUCTION?

When Botox got its FDA approval for cosmetic use a few years ago it took the country by a storm. Year by year the number of women and men succumbing to the allure of looking many years younger due to loss of wrinkles climbed to an astronomical height.

Watch out! There is a new kid on the block called “Mesotherapy” which will create a new wave of demand just like Botox. While most people have not even heard of it, I see its popularity increase by leaps and bounds.

What is Mesotherapy? Mesotherapy is a non-surgical effective treatment of localized fat deposits. Fat pads like saddlebags, tummy bulges, bra strap bulges, love handles, etc. are injected with a fat dissolving solution. The local fat metabolism is stimulated, leading to breakdown and excretion of targeted fat. The substances used for Mesotherapy are well known for their effectiveness, based on intravenous use in the treatment of hyperlipedemia.

While Mesotherapy in this country is mostly known in connection with fat and cellulite dissolving, it evolved in France over 50 years ago as a practice to treat a variety of medical conditions, using different injection techniques and injection solutions. The treatment of localized fat is the youngest branch of Mesotherapy. Important research has lead to a better understanding of the process and has a promising outlook.

Particularly the removal of abdominal fat appears to have beneficial effects for diabetics and people with cholesterol problems. Mesotherapy is NOT, however, a treatment for obesity. Mesotherapy is for people who lead an active and healthy lifestyle, but cannot get rid of certain fat bulges despite their best efforts.

Removal of fat has up to recently been the exclusive domain of the plastic surgeon with liposuction, a rather aggressive surgical treatment requiring much downtime in addition to being hard on the pocket book. Mesotherapy is an easy in office procedure with no down time and is a welcome relatively painless alternative to surgery at much lower cost.

With careful selection of the client, results are very satisfactory. A series of 3-5 sessions are required on average. Client follow-up that is now looking at 4 years of observation has shown no recurrence of fat deposition in the areas treated.

As is true for many new procedures that come along in Aesthetics promising a breakthrough or cure, interested people are faced with the ordeal of sorting out the chaff from the wheat. An enormous number of Mesotherapy places have sprung up in this country misusing this method, leading to a bad reputation by people with bad experiences, and this is of concern. Efforts are underway to standardize and streamline this new field. I am impressed by the efforts by European, South American and US experts to supply us with their latest research. Meanwhile, clients are urged to be cautious with the selection of their Mesotherapist, to ask questions, view before & after pictures and look at results.
