Mesotherapy FAQ's

1. What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is an exciting and elegant non-surgical alternative to liposuction for both men and women. It dramatically reduces cellulite and fat on any part of the body. Mesotherapy is a technique that was invented in 1952 by French physician Dr. Michel Pistor and is practiced worldwide by over 15,000 physicians. Mesotherapy uses microinjections of conventional or homeopathic medications and/or vitamins into the middle layer of the skin (the mesoderm) to deliver nutrients or fat dissolving “cocktails” to a specific area of the body. Mesotherapy has been recognized as the latest breakthrough for body sculpting, cellulite and fat reduction, and skin rejuvenation and has been featured by ABC 20/20, Newsweek, US News & World Report, CBS 48 hours, MSNBC and others.

2. What is Lipodissolve?
Lipodissolve is a form of Mesotherapy that is practiced by many practitioners around the world and was started in Italy and Brazil several years ago using Phosphatidylcholine injections. Phosphatidylcholine (PCDC) is used to melt fat in the targeted areas. Our MAI™ Mesotherapy doctor, Barbara Ringwald, M.D., is an expert in both Mesotherapy and in Lipodissolve cocktails. She will determine how to best customize your cocktail of medications to give you the maximum results for fat melting/ and or cellulite reduction.

3. How does Mesotherapy work?
Our MAI™ cocktail of medications is superficially injected into the mesoderm layer of the skin evenly melting the fat beneath the skin and shrinking the fat cells in the scarpa's fascia layer. The fat dissolves, and as occurs when fat is broken down during natural weight loss, is carried through the bloodstream and eliminated by the body through excretion. Treatment areas will stay free of fat.

4. What are the benefits of Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is measured in loss of inches. Many of our clients report losing 2-5 inches in the treated area. Mesotherapy can enhance the appearance of men and women of all ages while boosting self esteem. This procedure is not for obese people. It is not meant to replace good eating and exercise habits, or to counter obesity; however, Mesotherapy can offer help to dissolve excess unwanted fatty deposits in many areas of the body and is excellent for treating and reducing cellulite.

7. How many treatments do I need?
At MAI™ our clients have an average loss of 1"-1 1/2" inches in the treatment area after one session. Number of treatments vary depending on your body metabolism and goals which our mesoexpert, Barbara Ringwald M.D., will discuss with you in your private medical consultation. Mesotherapy/ Lipodissolve is not a cure for obesity, but rather an excellent way to target and melt fat deposits and dissolve cellulite in areas that you cannot lose through traditional means of diet and exercise-(up to 5 inches in one area). Results are visible 2-3 weeks later after just one treatment session for body-sculpting and fat reduction. Most of our clients are very happy with their results after 3 treatment sessions in one area. One area consists of both sides if there are two, i.e. both saddle bags. Fat reduction is offered in single sessions or at a discounted package of 4 sessions. With cellulite reduction, most of our clients see exciting changes after their first treatment, however, to achieve desired goals a package of 4 sessions is required and that we offer at a discounted price.

8. What is the difference between Liposuction and Mesotherapy?
Liposuction- Painful surgical procedure requiring 1—2 weeks recovery time, restrictive girdles and other garments for 2-4 weeks.
Mesotherapy- Uncomfortable, but not painful like liposuction, quick recovery time and no down time for most areas except for abdomen and chin areas. See below. With Mesotherapy-no girdles or restrictive clothing are needed.

Liposuction- Is a Surgical procdure and involves all the risks associated with anesthesia and surgery including in very rare instances the loss of life.
Mesotherapy- Non-invasive requires no general anesthesia, no reported life threatening reactions.

Liposuction-Years after the procedure the surface of the skin may become knobby because of tiny fat islands.  If a client gains weight, the treatment area stays flat, but distant areas of the body may develop fat bulges in unusual areas rather than evenly throughout the body.
Mesotherapy- Long term results are favorable. There is no weight gain in the treated area, which stays smooth and no fat bulges elsewhere.

Liposuction- Does not treat cellulite. In fact it is documented that liposuction can worsen the appearance of cellulite. Liposuction creates fibrosis and scarring under the skin.
Mesotherapy- The mesotherapy cocktail of medications dissolves hardened connective tissue fibers that trap fat cells and toxins causing cellulite, resulting in smooth soft skin. With mesotherapy the structure and function of your natural tissue is preserved.

9. Is Mesotherapy safe? What are the side effects?
Yes very safe in healthy people. Mesotherapy was developed over 50 years ago and continues to evolve. Please view our upcoming media center for extensive articles and worldwide mesotherapy associations. Temporary side effects vary individually and include: itchiness in the area right after treatment for the next 30 minutes, substantial swelling peaking on day 3-4, bruising in the injection site, tenderness and dizziness. There are no long term side effects reported. In order to have the procedure done you must qualify medically. It is of utmost importance that you inform MAI™ of ANY medical conditions you have. Mesotherapy is very safe in healthy people; however, there may be complications with medical conditions.

10. Is Mesotherapy/Lipodissolve painful?
The majority of our clients experience minimal discomfort. Multiple microinjections are given in the treatment area. The injections themselves are not painful because of the tiny size of the needle. For your comfort, you have the option of using our very effective numbing cream. If you wish to use our numbing cream you need to be at our office 45 minutes earlier than your appointment for application. Ingredients of the numbing cream consist of lidocaine which is used in dental offices as one of the local anaesthetics.

11. Is there any downtime?
No. For most body areas you may resume your normal activities immediately, although we recommend waiting 48 hours to exercise so that the medications can have their effect on the treated area. The body area will feel heavy and you will have swelling. It’s recommended to take it easy that first day. The abdomen and chin areas are the most sensitive. Most of our clients report a 2 day recovery window for these areas. We recommend getting the procedure done for these areas on a Friday and taking it easy over the weekend.

12. What is the MAI™ cocktail?
MAI™ cocktails are mixtures of solutions individually tailored to the needs of the individual client. They are FDA approved medications designed to dissolve either fat or hardened collagen strands. While all cocktail ingredients are individually FDA approved, the use of a combination of them is a so-called "off-label" procedure. Each physician is using slightly different mixtures. Our solution medications are purchased from highly reputable pharmacies. Off-label use of medication is common. An example of this is Botox, which is FDA approved only in the frown area. The safe use of Botox in other areas of the face and neck is also called “off label”. “Off labels” are left to the judgment of Physicians.
